If you are useing the stock size push rods with a low to mid. lift cam Then I'm not sure that i would worry about the guide plates. But If your useing bigger push rods and Cutting the head open for the bigger size rods and a larger size cam, Then Yes I would think about useing the guide plates. I have run the Stock size push rods with a 600 lift cam and have not had any problems in 19 yrs of running this motor with out them. But everyone has there own opion on what they Like to build there motors. Hope this helps.
