In the Tech Tips section there is an article about an S-10/F body T-5 Hybrid swap. I tried contacting the webmaster to hopefully reach the author. There are a few things that aren't addressed: I wondered why they weren't able to use the S-10 tailshaft. Wouldn't this take care of the speedometer gear location issue? Was it a different diameter/legnth,...? And what about the rear end gears? If you have, say 4:11s behind a tranny that was designed for 3:45s wouldn't that affect the speedometer accuracy? What do you do to correct this?

Yes, you can use the S10 tailshaft. I recently rebuilt a V8 T5 and used the S10 housing and shaft. To do this, you need to completely disassemble both trannies and reuse the gears from the V8 T5. Also check the condition of the snout on the tailshaft for ANY wear or discoloration. Also check the inside bearing surface on the input shaft for the same. If there is any wear, the parts are junk and you will need to buy new ones. I know of a fairly cheap source for T5 parts if you need it.
Yes, if you make a significant change in rearend gearing or tire size from what was used on the donor tranny vehicle, the speedo gears will need to be changed. If the current setup reads correctly, then you would want to use the same number of teeth on the new setup.
One thing to remember with the S10 T5's is that the mechanical and electric senders are not the same or interchangeable. So if you are using a mechanical speedo, make sure the S10 tranny had a mech. sender to begin with.

I'll be using a NWC tranny so my mechanical speedo should work. At that point I'll find out if I need a longer cable. I want to use the same 3:36 gears I have in the rear and go with 14 inch 70 series tires. I just hope that the overdive won't be too much for my mostly stock 194 6. I guess at that point I could go with lower profile tires.

You will want to look for a 82-87 T5 from an S10 then for a NWC with mech speedo.
In my opinion, you pick tire sizes based on what looks right for the vehicle, and then gear it accordingly. But I wouldn't worry too much about it, downshifting to 4th even on the interstate with that 3:36 shouldn't be too bad. Run the numbers through one of those gear calculators and see what you get. 4th would be the same as what you have now actually, since it is 1:1.

Actually I picked the tire size because I know it won't rub. I have a T-5 from a 4cyl Camaro already. The overdrive gear is .73. Now I need the S-10 tranny. This is a daily driver type of car. I'm not looking for horsepower as much as mileage.

I pulled a T5 out of an '82 S-10 pickup this afternoon at the wrecking yard. I got home and ran the numbers and found I have a 1989 unit for a 4 banger. So the original one died and somebody swapped in a newer one. Now does somebody make a stock looking speedo for a '64 Nova that is set up for an electronic signal?

I had built at a tranny shop a complete T5 tranny, using the guts from a camaro and the housing of an S10. I plan on using an electrical speedo unit. The tranny is now in the 3100 behind a 292. The corvette clutch is 11''. If you need to change the rear end ratio check out this site: smokemup: http://www.smokemup.com/auto_math/mph_range2.php
