I'm swapping out a 235 for the 216 in my 49 Chevy Styleline. The engine is from a 61 truck and will be bored 60 over and running 2x1 offy, fentons and hei. I'm using the flywheel, clutch, and bellhousing from the 216.

My question is how do I know if I should get a new clutch and pressure plate? There was lots of chatter in the car, the pedal bounched like crazy and there was some slipage but I think some of that was due to worn out motor mounts. Should I just replace everything to be safe?

Thanks, Bill

Chatter could be from motor mounts, but not slippage. I check the pressure plate and flywheel for scoring and blueing and replace as necessary and always replace the clutch disc.

I have seen the pilot bushing come loose in the end of the crankshaft, which could also cause chatter. Oil on the disc is another.
Since you are going to have everything apart anyway, replace the disc for sure, and have the flywheel surfaced like Baldeagle suggested. Have the machine shop look at the pressure plate for you to see if it needs replacing or not. I typically replace everything when doing a complete rebuild just for the peace of mind. I hate doing things twice.
