I am thinking about a T5 for a hot rod project, and I need to source a s-10 extension housing, and a suitable Camaro 5 speed. Naturally a mechanical speedo drive is required.

As shipping comes into consideration when you live overseas, I need to find one as close to LA as possible.

What would I expect to pay for these parts?

I recently paid $125. (American dollars) for a low-mileage T-5 from a wrecked S-10 in Pennsylvania. The same transmission may cost more in California.

Lord, let me live long enough to do all the projects I have planned!

Thanks Dennis and John for the insight to gearbox costs.

John, I just chacked out your site, and have to ask, what rear gear ratio do you run, and how do you find the short 1st gear of the S-10?

I've got a 4.11 early Ford banjo rear, so the overdrive would be great for it, but I want to avoid the "Granny gear" of the S-10, hence the question about a Camaro T5.

Dear Mark;

That sounds about right on the price (100-$150).

Try searching just the "truck parts" salvage yards.

Good luck. \:\)

I paid $116 for the one I pulled at the wrecking yard on a sale day.

Mark-
My S-10 transmission has a 4.03:1 first gear, which is no where near being a granny gear. It's actually just right for me. The motor doesn't wind out at all. I have a 3.90 rear end in my truck.

The S-10 T-5 I have in my 37 truck has a 3.76:1 first gear. While is is lower than the original first gear, it doesn't seem like it and Is not even close to a granny gear. I'm running a 3.55 rear gear.

I want the engine to rev at arond 2000 rpm at 60 mph, so using 4.11 gears on a 0.72 overdrive with 30" tall tyres is the go.

The taller the first gear the better. The multiplier effect of first x rear gears makes a shorter first gear less practical. I have a T5 in my falcon sedan, and it has a 3.25 first gear with a 3.27 lsd. With 25" tall tyres, I can get 30 mph out of first, at around 4000 rpm, enough for the drags in my coupe.

Joe what did you get your 3.7 first gear'd T5 out of? do you have any numbers?

Cheers

Mark

Mark... a lot depends on what you're running for an engine and if you plan on hot rodding it! If you're using a V8, you'll definitely want to go with the WORLD CLASS (WC) T5 from the V8 Camaro.
This will need the S10 tailshaft plus modification of the speedo gear location. If you're using it behind a 6 cylinder the NONE WORLD CLASS (NWC) would probably do. You mentioned a .72 OD so you must be thinking of a S10 NWC T5 from a V6 application. In that case you wouldn't need the tailshaft.

The WC Camaro T5's are geared either 2.95, 1.94, 1.34, 1.0, .63 or 3.35, 1.93, 1.29,1.0,.63. With your 4.11, 30" diameter and a .63 overdrive you would be turning 1740 rpm at 60 MPH.

The NWC T5's have OD ratios of .72 from the V6's and .86 from the L4's. If your were running a 6 cylinder you would be turning 1989 at 60 MPH.

You need to be very careful to pick the correct T5 and gearing to match your engine. WC T5's in good shape are going from $500.-$750.USD. NWC T5's can be had from $150-$300 but you're buying a used unit from a salvage yard.

Just a suggestion....include a bit more information about your vehicle/engine and you will get more specific information. The "search" function will also yield a miriad of T5 information. I hope this helps. http://community.webshots.com/user.Fla54Chevy3100

1985 Camaro 4 cyl NWC T5 =$50
Inspection and assembly
by a pro cost =$400
S-10 ouptut shaft =$100
S-10 tailhousing =$150
Bearing kit =$100
Bearing retainers =$40
Credit for giving him parts tranny -$50
Tax =$32.18
Total =$822.18

Note that this does not include the $1520 it cost me to have a shop remove the 3 speed, install the 5 speed and fabricate a tailshaft support.

This trans was not rebuilt and has survived almost a year now in my car.

And just to reiterate what Flat 54 said earlier, choose your gearing carefully or else you'll end up losing mileage in the overdrive. I can't use my overdrive because of my rear gears with my 194. The engine is too underpowerd for what I was trying to do. The overdrive brought the RPMs down to 2088. A good zone to be in but not for a 194, aparently. \:\(

Mine came out of a 1985-1986 S-10 V-6 Blazer. It is, of course, Non World Class (NWC). First is: 3.76, second is: 2.18, third is: 1.42, fourth: 1.00 and fifth (overdrive): .72. The number on the transmission is: 1352-145 ML3.

I have it coupled to a 3.55.1 Chevrolet passenger car rear end. I'm running 15" wheels with tires that are 28.3" diameter. In fifth (overdrive), I'm turning about 1950 rpm at 65 mph.

I am very pleased with it.

strummin -

I'm running a 56 261 bored to 270 with an Isky cam, 2 X 1 on an Eddelbrock intake, an 848 head milled .60 and Fenton headers through some Douglass steel pack mufflers and 2" pipes.

It does OK! \:D

Nice. \:\)
The T5s are nice shifting trannies but I made a mistake. Looking back I should have asked more questions. \:\(

I know I have stated this before, the T-5 tranny is a good non-racing street tranny for GM inlines.
I know quite a few of you use it in your pickups with a bench seat, hence the S-10 forward mounted shifter. If you wanted to dump the bench seat and go with a nice pair of bucket seats, the 305/350 Camero T-5 is a bit stronger (handles more torque & HP) and the ratios are quite good.

Hooked to the back of my 1970 292, .040, 3x2 H/W,
is a 1993 Z-28 T-5 with a 2:95 1st gear and a .72 OD gear. It is backed by a 1968 Nova 10 bolt 8.2" stuffed with 3:55 Richmond gears and a posi. I run 15"x 8.5" rims with 30.5" tall tires. My tach reads 1850 rpms @ 65 mph!

Mark.
There are success stories here but mine was not. If I had to do it all over again I would've just rebuilt the 3 speed.

I have several choices for engines for my coupe - and all will hopefuly be built - one day!!

They range from stock 235's, to a built 235 + 0.030" pop-ups, triple carbs, and a 270ish duration cam.

I also have a Wade blower setup, which pumps 5lbs of boost.

for 261's I have a hop up setup, with 0.155" pop-up pistons, which will be built with 292 rods, for around 300 C.I. I have a 280/290 degree duration cam for this Mother of all Stovebolts.
I also have another 261 to be built, and it'll run jimmy rods, flat-tops and some serious head work, and possibly the blower.

I want to build an engine to give all the flatheads guys out here a run for their money ;\)

Going by what you guys have said - I'll have to run a WC T5, given that the Camaro has the ratios I want, it looks like this will be quite an expensive proposition. Ah well - horsepower doesn't come cheap.

Basically I want to run at around 2000 rpm with 4.11 gear, 30-31" tall tyres at 60 MPH.

Mark,

I am coming to Melbourne the end of January. I will be arriving by private jet and have room for "small" items. Email me if you need anthing from the states brought over....a T-5 will fit in my baggage compartment if you can get it to me in California by January 12.
