I'm not up to speed on 3/4 ton rears but unless there are nuts or bolts on the front of the housing then it is a rear loader and the entire center carrier section or what is commonly called the pumpkin is not removable. Way back when Chevy used a torque tube rear they did have a stamped steel rear cover and the center carrier section was removable from the front

One of the truck enthusiasts may be able to give you a more specific answer.

Fucho. Mike G has it right, if you don't have "nuts or bolts on the front" and back, then it is a rear loader. Eaton rear axles were common to C20s and above, and have a removable pumpkin. I have the Eaton in my 63 C20. Let's us know what you have.

It does have bolts on both sides of the axle so it must have a removable center section I still cannot find any info ??

It's probably an Eaton H052. At best the gear ratio is 4.10:1 more than likely 4.56 or higher. There are some 3.90s around but next to impossible to find. I you want better highway gears you will have to change the rear axle.

Dear Mr. Fucho;

Larry's right and those gears are needed for hauling heavy loads in town. Turn wheel watch driveshaft to see.

What else do you need to know?? \:\)

The 67 - 72 3/4 ton rears with automatic have a rear end that had 4:10 gears in them. They look just like the early 50's 3/4 tons, same bolt pattern, has bolts/nuts on both sides. I would have to look but I believe there are 10 bolts on each side. It is removable there may be others that bolt up directly to it but the 4:56 and 5:14 or something like that are the other gears found in the 50,s 3/4 tons. Not sure if they came out with the 4:56 rears in 67 -72 3/4 ton rears with that bolt pattern. If you have the 4:10 and deside to change your rear let me know I would be intrested in the pumpkin, Good luck

Steve

Just installed a 4.10 from a 1969 into my 1954 3800 series truck. It was formely 5.14 to 1. It is much more freeway capable now, but am looking for speedometer drive gear to match the new gears!These are direct bolt in to the early trucks.The early 3/4 tons 3600 series were 4.56 ratio and were known as HO-52 the one ton 3800 series were 5.17 and were called HO-72

You can get all sorts of ratios fro those trucks, and it is not dependant on auto or stick . As well it depends on if it was a big block or small block. All big blocks got teh Dana rear and you can get better gearing in those. I have a 71 3/4 big block with the dana and 3.42 gear from teh factory. I have another parts truck with a dana as well.

This thread has helped answer some questions I have had about my rear. I've never been able to ID it up til now. I only know it's got a 4:56 ratio. I have wanted to change the ring and pinion to a 3:90, but if the carrier/pumpkin isn't removeable as Mike G says is a possibility, then I will have to start searching for another axle.
Any suggestions on what year truck will work on a 69 C-20?

I have 68 C20 that had 4.56 gears and leaf springs. I replaced it with a 73 C20 or 30 that had a big block and auto in it. The axle was a rear loader with 3.73 gears and a sway bar. \:D The 73 axle was bigger, larger brakes, and bolted right in. It was also wider, but I didn't have problems with wheel clearance. The only problem I had was one shock was angled forward and the other back. To make the one angled back work I used a shock bolt from the front in slotted hole that was already in the frame with a washer. I then welded the washer to the frame. It was a tight fit, but haven't had any problems in three years. The 16 inch wheels I'm running are from a 92 chevy truck. Hope that helps.

Thanks Larry....that's about what year I was hoping would work. The boneyards around here have plenty of mid seventies trucks to pick from.As long as I find a good full floater w/8 lug hubs.I want to keep the truck same as it is now.
