I have a 3-speed overdrive trans,now I put the soleinoid in a vise to see if it worked, with 6 volts. My question is that if you put 6 volts to the soleinoid, will it engage by itself? Because for it to engage, I have to help it along. Please help

If it is a 6V solenoid it will engage in your vise.
If it is a Chevy solenoid it is parobably 12V and will not work on 6V.

I have a F..d (there goes the F-Word) 6V solenoid on my 58 Chevy OD that works great.

The way I've tested mine is to use jumper cables and use the attachment area to establish the ground. If you have to "...help it along..." does this mean that your solenoid is 12V and you are only goosing it with 6V ??

Can you tell if a solenoid is 6 or 12V just by looking at it? Anyone have a book of solenoid #'s to tell the difference?

They look the same cause they are interchangable.
Mein is not even saying "6V".

I´m sorry to say that, but if if you have to help it along and your 6V battery is in good condition it is most likeley a 12V unit.

Try to find a 6V Ford solenoid.

Mr. Hog;

I think if you cleaned the contacts and tested it with a 12V battery, it would be just fine.

Good luck. \:\)
