I just noticed there is a lump above the port. Can this be grounded flat or is there a water passage on the other side?

If you had the bolt boss removed and the small lump left over is what you are taking about yes it can be smoothed out to be flush with the top of the head or the pipe plug that was installed. Hope this helps.

Sorry bro, I didn't mean lump port on the intake, I meant the exhaust.

There is this bump in the upper left area of the #1 exhaust port. It takes up a bit of room.

The lump that he is talking about is in the upper left corner of the port. And NO you can Not CUT this lump out YOU will either hit WATER OR you will be cutting into the front corner bolt boss if you cut to deep.
Frenchtown flyer
Now as to the exhaust lump port PE had a set for the chevy head(steel ones) BUT you had to cut the head to install these lumps them weld the head back up,is what he had told me at one time. And that is how that lump was held in place. After I got my set of intake lumps I had made a set on my mill. Seems to me with a little more time I could have made them out of steel Or even a little taller. Closer to what the braze in lump looks like.

Now that I have a head I have been cutting up I may look into this more for the exhust port. It kinda seems to me There maybe a way to do this. But biggest problem is wheather or not it could be a bolt in???? And again another problem is the size of that port to start with It is much smaller then the intake port. So wheather or not the valve flare Of the lump would fit the port opening. And This may very well be the reason for haveing to cut the head in the first place. OR maybe even More of a water hitting issue. I wil try and keep you up dated on what i find. As I am now taking the time I should have 2years ago on doing the tech on how to install the lumps into the chevy head. So i now have a old cracked head to work with and cut up as i see fit. SO far I have a about a half a roll of pictures for this. To show as much of the water port area as well and to where the head can be drilled and Not Drilled. So I will look into this exhust Port much closer at the same time.

Hope this becomes of Help guys/gals

It's done. I'll take a picture and post this afternoon. I only went on to do it because this port #1 was lacking behind compared to the others. I also "winged" (as Santucci says) the other exhaust ports where the bosses pass. Worked out pretty good.

As for the #1 port, I didn't have the nerve to go all the way, becuase you're right, the water flow is on the other side. Didn't want to make the wall too thin.

When I visited Precision Engine Service a few years ago, there was a Chevy head on the flow bench that had received the full lump port treatment on both intake and exhaust ports. I asked the same question on the exhaust lumps and Clyde replied to the effect that the exhaust lumps do increase flow, but the work involved was too expensive to be cost-effective for most customers.

hello....well if you want the truth about how the lumps work in the exhaust call MIke Kirby-he will tell you ...we can keep saying this and that, but trust me ALL this has been figured out LONG ago...for those who have the Inline Manual you can see the cut away of the head with the work Kirby does....and as Jack has seen, i also have been to Precision Engine Service and seen the exhaust lumps- i even saw the aluminum bolt in 1's he had-but they needed more work to install than just bolt-in ....mmm i even saw heads with them installed and those heads were not cut open....interesting huh?...well i guess you could keep guessing or accept what works and what doesnt-wish i had that much time.... have fun....

Lee,

I'm not sure if you understood me from the get go. I don't have those lumps you are refering to. I have looked over Santucci's book and now I know what you mean by lump port for the exhuast. The book has a tremendous amount of PICTURES!!!!! Very cool book.

This head I have is for street use. Still has the intake boss but worked some. I worked the bosses on the exhaust too.

All the exhaust ports looked good 'cept #1 port. That bump took up A LOT of room so freeing it up like the other 5 exhuast ports I felt was neceassary...Take it easy hometown.

Almost done with the pictures crew.

Well first off i have to add my 2cents here. WHO said anything about try to change things.
No Body. Only asked if it could be removed or cut down. And by adding a lump to either intake or exhust only helps both sides to get or motors to breath that much better No matter whos motor it is. and we're all here to help one another out. We all want the best for as little as we can. And we all know
that. And i know we are all here to learn all that we can, And have fun at doing so. And i think It's better to ask the same 20-30 question over and over Then it is to do something that ends up costing you twice as much in the long run, To have never asked in the first place. So let's not take things the wrong way or to badger one another. We're all still learning EVEN the long time been THERE DONE THAT guys who are still till to this day doing R&D on these heads.Or other wise they wouldn't be trying to make new heads of any kind Or would not be trying to bring them back Into production. So lets just share our been there done thats and any other info we have and Just have fun. And if we can't do that? Then how Are we to get our club to grow.?
I know this maybe taken the worng way(intexted) to some but,I want to see US all get along and Make this club grow even bigger.
PS. SO thanks for letting me vent my 2cent worth. }[oooooo] SMILE have a Great Day & Fun.
