I got a 165 hp Mercruiser Chevy 250
for 30.00 bucks that was factory
rebuilt and then sat in a garage
for a couple of years.I was
wondering how that engine would
run in a truck.(What kind of cam
is in it etc...).
Thanks!!!!!!

I've seen this question before, unfortunately don't remember all of the details. Seems to me that changing the cam was one of the things suggested, besides replacing all the marine gear. The marine engines are designed more for steady engine RPMs. Here is a thread I found on Stovebolt.

Here is the thread I remember. Did a search of the archives using "marine".

my book shows a .387/.387 with 172/172 duration and a .388/.406with 172/190 duration lift cam for the 250 pass/trk. motors where as it shows a .403/.403with 192/192 duration cam in the marine motor. Duration was taken at.050 cam lift.Maybe this will help--Paul

in the feb '73 issue of HRM, there's an article on 6 cyl hop-ups. they actually suggested the use of a chevy marine cam (part no. 3891 589) for street use. there aren't any specs given other than "has a higher lift than the stock cam and is available from chevy marine dealers for about $25". course that was 1973, and there are certainly better cam choices now. unless you know your cam part no, this probably doesn't help much. wish i could find a rebuilt 250 for $30 though.

I fired the engine up Sunday,
it runs really good.The oil
preasure and everything else
shows good.It also runs good
in the truck with an Edelbrock
carb,headers,and a 350 tubo
