Here are a few shots of my Wayne head which the UPS girl dropped off yesterday. Am I excited? Well let's just say we slept real close last night (me & the head, not the UPS girl)... This is the first customer head shipped by Wayne, but it's #06 by my request. Casting is from the original Toros 18-bolt pattern from almost 50 years ago, with many improvements. The final machining - to say nothing of the entire R&D program - was CNC programmed by Jerry Weigt. The head weighs 32.5 lbs.

This is the intake side of the head. Roller rocker stand will be coming soon.

Sorta like a masterpiece signed by the artist.

The chambers are like mirrors.

Yup, it's a hemi. Valve sizes are 1.94 intake and 1.55 exhaust. The valves will be one-off specials made in Argentina.

Exhaust side. Special Wayne cast headers will eventually be used, but I think Ford 300 duals will fit with a little work.

This head will be used on my 285 cu in stroker block built by Tom Langdon. Lots of decisions on cam profile, induction and other details are upcoming. Some dyno work will be done once it's together. What's it going in? A severely channeled, lightweight East-Coast style roadster with no hood and minimal mufflers. At least that's the plan at the moment...I'll post further details as progress is made. And yes, the UPS girl will have a few more stops to make here, but I won't report progress there...

Jack, Had to load images individually 'cause I could'nt hook the link, but in any case, Wow! I only wish for now, but a 235 is in the future after my '55 is done. Are you swapping out to your current motor or building another one around this head?

Gentlemen;

I bought the last one Harry Warner had in 1962 when he was still in Burbank, Ca. The patern(s) had just been sold to Bob who was in Long Beach at the time I think.

Never quite got all the money together to finish the whole project and sold the car & engine in 1983. Was a 278" in a 34 3 window Chevy coupe with a Muncie 4 speed etc.

The only problem they ever had was blowing head gaskets between 1-2 & 5-6 with the stock type gaskets they had back then and that only happened if you 'lugged it down' in street operation.

What you have will work better than you think. So be ready for 'whiplash'.

Thanks John

Was the head you got from Warner an 18-bolt or 15-bolt design? We are very interested in the history of these patterns and present whereabouts of these very rare items.Perhaps you can help us fill in some of the gaps. I'll E-mail you for further discussion.

Dear Steven;

In a perfect world one could expect one horsepower per cubic inch & then some.

That's normaly aspirated without, NOS @ sea level.

Not bad for a 1940(s) design piece of aluminum
stock.

Steven,

Well I guess the dyno will tell the tale...this is not going to be a race engine but wont be a girlie motor either. I would be very pleased with one hp/cu in but am more concerned with a early torque curve and over 300 ft/lb total. Cam is looking like .5" lift and about 230' I/E duration, but nothing is cast in stone yet. Tomorrow I will to check the deck height to come up with the exact compression ratio. I'm expecting about 9.5:1 but want to be totally sure before putting anything together.

Twisted6 noticed a slight lip in the intake bowls - You can see these "lips" in picture #4 just under the valve guides. This bothered me (thanks Larry!) so I spoke to Weigt last night and he said yeah, that can easily be removed with a die ginder, but results would never be noticed on a street engine.

What an education I'm getting with this deal.

Jack, what pistons are you going to use? Is anyone making hypereutectic pistons yet?

The pistons are flat-top +.030 cast items, OEM replacements for a 1980-84 Cadillac 368 cu.in V8. The short block was built by Tom Langdon per his article in the Sept/Oct 2003 "12 Port News". Offset ground crank (now 4.125" stroke), 292 rods etc.

I don't know if the hyper pistons are available for this application. If they were I probably couldn't afford them!

Just a quick question about your 285, What block is this, I was under the impression a 261 could only be bored out to a 278. Where are you getting the extra cubic inches?

Jack, I'm sorry, I forgot you were working with a Chevy.

Hypereutectic pistons are cheaper than forged, don't expand as much, thus tighter clearances can be used and are stronger than cast pistons. The closest to fit a 302 are 366 Chevy pistons, but still not close enough. Most all modern cars come w/ hypereutectic pistons.

Hi Bill,

Offset ground crank (now 4.125" stroke), 292 rods etc.

That's were the increase in displacement comes from. Should be a "torquer".
