Advice welcome!

I am in the disassembly process on a '68 Chevrolet C10 pickup. I'm ready to pull the engine and realized I don't know where to attach the lift. I'v seen pictures of V8s with the lift attached to a plate on top of the intake. Basic stuff I'm sure, but this is my first project and I don't want to tear anything up.

What points on the block and/or head can the chains on the lift be attached?

Thanks

David

Assuming the C-10 is safely blocked and the hood is removed, the tranny disconnected and all lines and wires disconnected then
take off the valve cover, remove the right front and left rear cylinder head bolts and slip them thru the end links of a 3 ft. chain of appropriate thickness(min.3/16 in.)
and opening. reattach the head bolts and have some help. The L6 can be unweildy so take care that it doesnt swing back toward the firewall as you roll out your hoist.

That's how I did mine. The only question I have now is, isn't the driver's side front head bolt the weakest one? Just curious after reading Leo's book a million times. Thanks. John.

Honestly, I don't know about the weak headbolt, but if Leo Santucci says so ,it's probably right. I've pulled my L235 3 times without incident this way and actually pulled a L250 from a '68 C-10 I had like David's. Of course I had wrecked it and didn't care much how I took it apart afer I got it home, I was so mad at myself!

Yes that is a weak point. When I pull my motors I hook it up at the clutch linkage point and one of the head accessory mounting holes. If the head is off you can use either the side cover bolt hole or one of the holes in the front of the block. hope this helps

I checked one of my newer heads and Chevy used lifting plates bolted to the head.
Front plate uses the two holes on right side of head where Battery neg cable typically attaches.
The rear plate attaches to a single hole that the older heads don't have.
The 64 Chevelle shop manual shows a lifting device which seems to require removing two head bolts and attaching two long eyebolts.
The center portion has two short chains with hooks.
I use the last intake manifold attaching hole in back and one of the holes on right front of head. To this I attach a chain I've marked for "engine only" or "engine with tranny attached" so engine goes in or out at proper angle the first time.
(I use a hyd. eng. crane and mark chain links where I need to attach to hook.)
Fortunately we can't use those intake manifold plates. As many flea mkt intakes I've seen with munged threads I'd be scared to dangle an engine by it's intake!
Hope this helps.
