You ever look into baffle-pack design mufflers? They fit in the same space as a glass-pack or steel-pack but are way quieter:


Years ago I had an Impala running a three two seven v-thingie with headers and glasspacks. Even with tail-pipes all the way to the back bumper it was loud inside. Really needed to crank up the Jensen Tri-axials to get music to overcome the exhaust note.

Ordered a set of baffle-packs from JC Whitney. Really quieted things down. Exact same dimensions as the cherry bombs, so they bolted right in. It was nice to be able to get my foot into it without drawing so much attention.

I have heard of guys opening a small hole in the plates on either end of these and reaming it progressively larger to let out more sound. The bigger the hole the more straight-through the exhaust path becomes. I left mine alone after installing them. And when I sold it the guy who bought it said he'd never heard such quiet glasspacks!

As with any baffling muffler design there is back pressure and flow suffers. But I never had to feather-foot around the cops anymore . . .
