Curious to see what answers come back. Not to recomend these for an L6. Entirely different car and motor, had an El Camino w/350. I had turbo mufflers on it. They dumped right before the rear axle. It sounded great in high school. Finaly completed the pipes all the way to the back bumper after driving it for eight years. The noise reduction inside made commutes to work far easier. Actually made it more enjoyable to ride in. It still sounded great, from behind. Now I am for placing the pipe exits as far away from my head as possible (back bumper for me).
Getting old perhapse? Just want to hear the carbs as they sing their little suction song.

Hey Nove Dude . . . You ever look into baffle-pack design mufflers? They fit in the same space as a glass-pack or steel-pack but are way quieter: Years ago I had an Impala running a three two seven v-thingie with headers and glasspacks. Even with tail-pipes all the way to the back bumper it was loud inside. Really needed to crank up the Jensen Tri-axials to get music to overcome the exhaust note. Ordered a set of baffle-packs from JC Whitney. Really quieted things down. Exact same dimensions as the cherry bombs, so they bolted right in. It was nice to be able to get my foot into it without drawing so much attention. I have heard of guys opening a small hole in the plates on either end of these and reaming it progressively larger to let out more sound. The bigger the hole the more straight-through the exhaust path becomes. I left mine alone after installing them. And when I sold it the guy who bought it said he'd never heard such quiet glasspacks! As with any baffling muffler design there is back pressure and flow suffers. But I never had to feather-foot around the cops anymore . . . regards, stock49

I have ran the turbo 300 & 400 thrush mufflers. I have seen & heard the dyno max, Flow master, Super trap mufflers all sounded pretty good. The super trap mufflers have removeable disks which can change the sound and back pressures. hope this helps }[oooooo]

i do believe thats my best bet stock 49. it would be easy to bolt up on the stock location for now. as far as them flowmasters, to high on price and everyone i know has em,,,,, the sound and performance is good,,,, its just the same ol sound tho. since i drive to work and back 40 miles a day on country back roads, the sound of the muffler is just getting louder and louder. so its time to hush that bad boy abit. thanks for the help. and let u know whats up on my move.

What type of sound are you looking for? If you want quiet and no attention, use a stock muffler. If you want power and a throaty sound, there are lots of combinations. You can't have a quiet muffler and the best torque and power situation. Power=A Throaty sound.
I have friends with big blocks and SuperTrapps and they want to know how I get the sound on my motor with my exhaust system. Just ask the guys who have heard my car about the sound that the Chambered Mufflers I put on my Inline make. At Idle and cruising speed, it's a nice low rumble. At throttle, it's three Harleys racing for their life!

baically the sound im looking for is this. low rumble on the outside, and very low interior sound. thats what i want under my foot. my wife can hear me coming a block away and she says it sounds prety good. i let her take the car up the street the other day and when she returned, lol, she said its really loud inside. and that was the first time i have ever heard my eshaust from a distance, and i really didnt like what i heard coming out the pipe. so i need a muffler with decent flow, and low interior sound, on a budget of course. and with a stock muffler, i know it will kill the whole sound, but i still need just a bit of rumble in the mix but just not overkill. thanks

You'll most likey have play around with the tone you're looking. Everyone's hearing is different. I would start with glass pack bullet with 1.5"-1.75" tail pipes. The smaller the diameter, the smaller the sound but it raps more. If you want a deeper tone, go for the 2"-2.5" diameter tailpipe. Buy adding a larger diameter tip (Echo Cans) you can make the sound deeper and louder! One other thing to consider. The more flow your engine makes the more robust sounding it will be. There is no one simple answer to your question. It's trial and error method. I've redone my exhaust system 3 times to get it the way I want.
Hope this helps.

hello...have you looked into Dynomax mufflers? the Super Turbo series?...Most Super Turbo's outflow most other performance mufflers and have both a quiet low rpm sound AND a performance higher rpm sound...i use to use them but then switched over to their UltraFlow series once they were available yrs ago(this series is straight-thru and allows AWESOME sound-no chambers to enhance sound , just raw engine sound....by trying different size pipes, you can achieve the amount of back pressure that works best for your engine combination....as I have learned and experienced, it seems best to use a straight thru muffler for best flow and then use a smaller pipe to control back pressure....as long as sound can flow away from engine and not back into cylinder in cam overlap, your performance will increase...as sound is trapped and bounces off sufaces, these waves can re-inter cylinder and cause performance loss....this principle has been researched for years and is still an interesting topic-so much so, you can still find muffler comparision's in many performance magazines)....so you might try using smaller pipe 1st and them ever adding another sound resonator(maybe a glasspack) to absorb lost "wandering" sound waves that cause unwanted volume.... good luck with your project... Lee Try this site...has most Dynomax mufflers-check out Super Turbo design.... http://a-1performance.com

Try generic turbos mufflers, any exh shop should have them, they will look just like your bullet shaped glasspack, except when you look through them you will see packing vs the glasspack which are straight through. Usually the glasspacks are red and these are blue. To quieten the sound down, get the longest muffler you can buy. I think they run like $20 a piece usually, you can also get the turbo in a pancake style, offset in and out, oddly enough its a little louder than the bullet style turbo muffler. The turbo style will take the edge of the glasspacks harshness and IMO improve it greatly, then again I hate glasspacks on a inline so I may be biased. Good luck
