Hi, my name is Steve. I bought a nice 1968 Chevy Nova last summer, with a stock 250ci engine hooked to a powerglide. I love the car, but would like to have some more fun with it.

I don't want to get into a cam change or a complete engine rebuild, but I would like to get some more power out of the old 250 6.

I turned the top of the air filter upside down, to get some more air flowing, and was I was impressed with the extra horsepower I felt.

I was thinking of adding a bigger carb, and maybe a different muffler, to get some more punch out of the 250.

What would be a good carb to run on the stock intake, maybe a 500cfm 4 barrel? Also what would be a good muffler, to add some sound and power, but still remain quiet at low rpm?

Also would changing gear ratios to say a 4.11 with 32 inch tires give me some more acceleration?

Please give me some advice on hopping up the 6 so I can give a hard time to the stangs in my town....cheers Steve

Dear Steve;

Larry (NOVAMAN) is the one to talk to on this as there are many options.

In the "old days" we would get a used head, rework it and then add a two carb & headers.
Putting it all on together, worked well too.

Good luck. \:\)

Steve have you thought about losing the 2 speed Powerglide and installing a TH350 in it's place?
It is just about a bolt in swap except for the kickdown cable hook up which you should be able to do using a cable and bracket set up from the later inlines that ran the TH350. This will give you 3 speeds instead of 2 and acceleration from a dead stop will be much better with the lower first gear.

No amount of adapters will ever make any 4 barrel carb work right on the stock manifold. I'd put what I already had into first class operation and tuning and save up to make other changes down the road. I don't like spending money for the same thing twice and you probably don't either so I try not to rush into changing parts and systems just for the fun of it and then when I do a real performance mod end up tossing what I did a few months ago and doing it again to suit the latest changes.

That carb I was talking about MIke is a 2bl (1bl with a secondary) a webber/holley carb from Tom Langdon Is the Better way to go. Not a standard 4bl. Besides that I don't even think there is adaptor to even go from a 4bl to a One only a 4 to a 2bl.

PS but seeing that he plains to swap to a Vthing. He Mit as well Just save his Bucks and not waste his time.Or Mine

Steve. You can run one or even two NEW 2bbl progressive Carter/Webers or the Holley/Weber progressive rebuilt carbs as stated above. Both are available from Stovebolt. The pictures are of the Carter carb with the adapter needed.

The TH350 would probably be the cheapest mod to add some acceleration to your Chevy II. You should be able to find a decent used one with converter for well under $200. Unless you want to step up to anoverdrive transmission, go for a higher rear end than the 4.11s. Something like a 3.55 should be a good compromise; you probably have a 2.73 or 3.08 now.

For a better carb, you will most likely need to go with a different intake, such as an Offy and with your stock motor, the Weber two barrel would work well. Might as well go with headers at the same time. Sometimes you can find these pieces on ebay fairly cheap. Good luck with the 68.
