Bill, Congradulations on your first inline.
I would suggest you get a factory service for your truck it will you the most information for setting it up. Sounds like you have an integral head, most of the later inline sixes from Chevy had them. If California was first then you may have to get a supplement for the smog.
The PCV valve blowing out is not a good sign. Get a service manual and run a compression check, soon.
