I got a used engine to put
in my truck and a couple
of days after I put it in,
gunk broke loose inside and
started cloging things up.
does anybody have a suggestion
on what I need to do to fix
the problem.I did a engine flush
and that made the problem worse.
Thank You!!!

Going to need a little more information. I assume this is a six, any smog equipment? What makes you think gunk broke loose? Just exactly what is it doing, smoking from exhaust?

Its a 1970 250 six in a 1975 chevy
truck. It started out with no oil
geting up to 3 rockers,I put some
mystery oil in it and it cleared up
some so I ran some engine flush
threw it and now I've got 4 cloged.
other than that it runs great.
When I found the rockers dry the first
time I checked the oil it was plenty
but really dirty.

id say for starters take off the oil pan and clean it out real good, and while your at it check the pump. the engine needs more than a flushing agent, cause certain oils over time react to different additives, if the guy who owned the engine never gave it oil change or constanly added a thickening agent or something, then over time it sort of jellies up a bit.

I kinda agree with slayer, doesn't sound like the po did it any good, but don't get desparate yet. Run a compression check, and check the oil pressure. How does it run?, in any case run the checks. You want compression around 100 psi and no cylinders more than 10 psi from the others. Oil pressure not much less than 20 pounds at idle. If the checks are good. You can pull the pushrods and clean them out. Run several sizes of piano wire thru them.

If I had the money I would have
gotten a rebuilt engine.The Offy
intake and headers I got at a fair
price and the engine came with
them. The guy told me that the engine was
gone threw bottem end was rebuilt
but apearently he didnt do something
right.Like I said it runs great.
When first started the oil preasure
stays around 40 pounds but after I say
20 minutes it drops to about 30 and at
idle it goes around 10-15 pounds at
least if my gauge is right. It does'nt
smoke or anything.

The oil pressure is good for a stock motor. You've got the same as mine and I've put some long miles on it. 10-15 pounds of vacuum is normal, indicates the top end is in at least fair condition. I'd run a compression check for piece of mind, considering what you have found.
Intake and headers at a fair price, doesn't sound like you've done too bad. The old engine? He said the bottom end was rebuilt. Well that could mean he dropped the pan and replaced the main and rod bearing. Did he have the crank ground?,,your guess is as good as mine. Doesn't sound like he went any further. I'd clean the pushrods, change the oil frequently, and use a good detergent oil.

I guess I'll be tearing into the engine.
Last guestion,on adjusting rockers
you tighten them down then half turn back,
right.

Now don't take my word for this; hopefully someone really in the know will chime in. I've heard of running straight ATF for a while will clean out all of the sludge. I don't know how long you're supposed to run it, or at what RPM. You certainly wouldn't want to drive around. Ask around before you try this cause it may be an urban legend or just plain old BS for all i know.

When you adjust the rocker arm, back them off till you hear the tapping. Then adjust to the point where just don't tap. Then turn in 1/4 turn increments to ONE full turn.
I don't know if I'd tear into right yet. It's a runner right now if you clean the pushrods. Do the compression check. Your oil pressure is good. Look for a 292, your headers and intake will work on it.
I'll be in Bakersfield for the weekend "Goodguys 45th March Meet".

i heard of a guy running straight tranny fluid for four years straight before he sold the thing. i wouldnt do it that long but you can use tranny fluid untill you change your oil again. Tranny fluid is a very good cleaner but i would run it for about 1000 km max just so the ATF doesnt build up a residue. If u want to test how good your tranny fluid will clean your hands, then get them real dirty, and then clean em with tranny fluid ( i havent bothered to try this but people say it works u just have to wash off the tranny fluid with soap and water afterward)

Never heard of running straight transmission fluid, have heard run 1 qt of it for 500 miles and then change oil and filter. Also had an oldtimer tell me to run 1 qt of diesel fuel in the oil for 500 miles, never tried it, but did try the 1 qt of tranny fluid, worked ok. Then there is always risolene or GM top end cleaner.
Good luck
