I am thinking about building a set of tube headers also. One obvious thing to keep in mind is the port size will vary from stock size if you enlarge (or plan to enlarge) the intake and exhaust ports.
I have a ported head from Sissels. I plan to build a 1/8 aluminium plate pattern to match the enlarged ports and then use it to build the header plate to match.
