You may have to do a procedure to the generator to get the field magnets to remember which way the electricity is supposed to flow, but that's about it. I know what I just said sounds very silly, but it's nothing more than holding a battery wire momentarily on the correct generator terminal just like you would do if you put a fresh rebuilt unit on.
Other than that, nothing should be hurt or bad. I've made that mistake of putting the battery in backwards, and it only really affects the ammeter and the gas gauge.

edit: the ammeter reads backwards and the gas gauge is plain inaccurate. they return to normal by connecting the battery correctly.
