I must say those new rides on the homepage now are awesome.
why do all the foriegn car makers make fuel injection or crossflows heads and stuff and American plants dont???
On mikes ride, the 66 nova, he said that the blowr is blowing through the carb...is that blower mounted upside down then? how would that affect air flow to the supercharger?
good stuff.

Theone61636,

Simple. The carmakers here use to take every last breath of anything. For this, brazilian built galaxies had the Y block engine up to 1976, GM used the venerable 261 up to 1978 in all gasoline powered commercial vehicles, and in 1994, German Opel quit making the 3.0L L6 engine used in Opel Omega, they just did not hesitate even one moment and shaped a 12 port head and a multi point fuel injection system for the old 250. It's somewhat complex, in fact almost a new engine if compared to the old school 250. Large one piece rear main seal like the ones found on latter models GM L4 181 cid engine, the valvegear is net lash, the system is distributorless, the cam has a special positioning sensor. The single most interesting part is the head. It's desing still allows the use of non-efi manifolds, although the intake ports are quite small, but placed much higher on the head, giving a performance advantege. There is a hype here that it was a desing made by Lotus. Truth or not, it was the same time that GM had owned Lotus and had made by them the LT5 Corvette engine, the Ilmor Indy engine and some other details. I'm quite interested in getting one of these heads and cutting it all apart to see the porting possibilities. And there is a super interesting split cast iron exaust manifold. Extremely well cast, decent flow, but seems a tight fit on pass cars. At least on our opalas. I have some pics of this efi 250. If you want some, just let me know and I can mail you them. The efi engine revs freely up to 4500rpm, and can go up to 5500, after that it does cuts off. Incredibly it does performs poorly when compared to the german 3.0 L engine. The same car equipped with both engines shows 10 kph more on top speed with the 3.0, the 0-60 is close, and fuel economy is lousy in the 250.

We should all like to see pictures of the 12-port 250! If you are unable to post them to this forum, please send them directly to Jack Halton so that he can put them up. Indeed, this engine as you describe it deserves a full article with pictures in the Twelve-Port News.

This engine could provide an interesting alternative for circle-track "stock car" racers, where torque rules and "top speed" is never an issue.

God's Peace to you.

Alexandre,
I second the motion on the pictures and possible article in "12 Port News".
Plus I think you should start shipping those injected 250's up here!
Just kidding, have no idea what would be involved. Expensive no doubt. Maybe even not legal? (for us to inport them)
Had no idea that there was such a thing as FI 250 Chevy.
We in the USA for all the cars and trucks seem to still get short changed on the really cool stuff that is available in Europe, Australia, Japan, and now Brasil as we're learning from your posts.
Please don't tell me the trucks in Brasil are running around with fuel injected, turbocharged 292s under the hood!!!

No kidding eh. I've never heard of a fuel injected 6 either. I've looked for how long but I've never seen one. Sounds like a great article for a write up!

same here in oz.in the 70's ford made a 2v head (detatchable manifold)for their 250's,then made a 200/250 iron head x-flow,then an allow head 200/250 x-flow(all in the 70's!)they then went on to make an over head cam inline 6 and now have a 320hp,turbo,alloy head 4 valve per cyl inline!!oz was always a 6cyl country with ford holden(gm)and chrysler trying to out do each other in the 6cyl stakes(great for the inline freak!!)gm released a 3 liter inline then put a turbo on it in hte 80's and chrysler had their hemi 6's which are still hard to beat and are still very desirable to own.

Will be mailing You the pics soon. I have some 6 pics, but can get much more.

To All Inliners Fellows,

During many years, there were 2 engines quite popular among performance enthusiasts here in brasil:
The air cooled VW, and the GM 250. A very healthy and big industry has grown around the VW engine, Mahle Cima offers kits for VW engines around the world, and they are all brazilian built. Some performence cases also. No to mention the stock cases made here and exported to everywhere.
The 250 GM is quite reliable and till today are quite popular around. There are 2 efi versions, one for the Omega and another for trucks. the omega one has a dedicated block, with a different bolt pattern, like the ones in the Olds Quad 4 L4 engine found on FWD newer cars. The truck engine is about the very same, but has the traditional chevy bolt pattern. So no sweat installing them on another vehicle with any tranny suited to a normal 250.
These efi engines are plentiful. To remove the efi and all related parts to fit for example in a non efi 250 engine already in US to reduce costs may be an option. But there are other details: first the super desirable one piece rear main seal block desing, second the lovely 6.000" long rods that came in all these motors, and finally the 12 port head that is required to fit the efi manifold to the engine. I do not sell parts as for living, and this is no place to sell things, but if anyone feels like having one, fell free to mail me and I'll for sure reply all the inquiries. Just as a side note, I love american engines, so any deal is valid, maybe a lot of V8 junk that You may have around the garage may be considered for deals. And fortunate enough for You all, these engines are not all that expensive.

No, unfortunatelly the trucks here ride on diesel engines. But we have a MWM sprint L6 engine, 4.2 litters, that I guess any inliner lover would give one leg and one arm for. ;-)))))
Guess I should start saving those 250efi, guess we can make some trades, what about diminishing the roddent infestation in your country, send me some and I'll send you some efi! Doesn't it sounds great?

buickroadster,

Necessity is the mother of all invetions. I have interest in all Oz-unique parts and engines. Like it a lot. The 265 Hemi is quite a piece of engineering. These local stuff should make us all proud!

Finally, what's Jack Halton e-mail adress?

The 3.0 Opel Omega engine mentioned earlyer, is an ohc engine and the engineblock isn't the same as the 250.
