Thanks to a member that reads the classifieds I was able to get an HEI for my old truck. The classifieds really work. Now I would like to know if I must up grade the wire from the ignition switch to the HEI, the one that used to run to the coil to a larger one? This will mean, I think, taking apart the steering colume and removing the ignition switch. Has anyone done this upgrade and did you change wires?

Which year truck do you have? I installed an HEI in my '65 Pickup and I changed to a heavier wire (actually shortened the wire out of the donor vehicle as it has the proper end for the distributor) and spliced it into the pink wire (I believe it is the wire that is "hot" only with the key turned on) and then heat shrank the joint. At one time I was under the impression that this feed wire has a built-in fusible link but I am not positive on that.

Yes you need to replace the HEI supply wire and it needs to be 12 ga. There is no way around it the old points wire just will not work.

It also must be a dedicated wire( not used to power anything else).
