I`m gathering the pieces to put a "292" in my `54 chevy pickup. Does anyone know of a way that I can keep the foot starter? The engine is out of a `68 pickup, and I haven`t seen it yet, so I don`t know what the bell housing looks like. I was expecting it to use an "up bolt" starter, and I`d be screwed! Please tell me there`s a way I can take the nose off of one and use the case and switch from the other, and make it all work. I know it`s crazy, but the "foot starter" is part of the old trucks character. Thanks for any help, JD Oh yeah, 292, std. trans,4spd.

May not be exactly what you want, but you could rig a momentary contact switch, such as the old style push button starter button under the floor. Then mount a lever off the original foot start to engage the push button.

Dear JD;

I think the last year for 'foot starters' was 1957. They were defiitely gone by 62 and the later engines all had a 'solenoid activated' starter.

You will have to "make-up" something to keep it.

good luck, John M....
