From an appearance stand point and performance at its time, the Alfa Romeo 6C2300 motors of the early thirties are my vote. Beautiful castings and the kicked serious tail in their time.
Bang for the buck is probably the Ford 300.
Most unexplored potential may be the Vortec motor.
