Ok guys, I need some input here about the possability of running a Turbo on ol Henrys flat 6 motor. Can anyone come up with any ideas on the type of induction system regarding such a set up? Incorporating a Turbo onto the motor is no big deal but what about carburation? How can I install the Turbo onto an intake manifold and still run carbs. Any help as usual will be greatly
appreciated. Thank you.......

Vinny, I'm e-mailing you a photo of a Mopar flathead six I saw at the NSRA Street Rod Nationals North today. It looks to be a Ford 2.3 turbo and a Holley 2V draw thru set-up. The owner was not available to answer my questions. I did not see a waste gate.

The exhaust pipe entered the turbo from the bottom and exited towards the bottom, ran parallel to the entry pipe several inches and then swept rearward out the back of the vehicle. The carb looked like a 500 2V w/ the big 50cc accelerator pump. Hope this helps. I wish I had gotten the owners name.

A brewski sounds good to me.

Warning, its includes everything you could ever want to know about turbos, fabrication of, installation of, tuning of and more. Another bonus, they really get off on blow through carb setups that work, to really pis off the efi guys that say it can't be done. \:\)

Oh yeah, read all the topics that have been made a sticky at the top of each section, also read the knowledge base, because I can assure you, you jump in asking questions that indicate you have not, you may not get a reply.

Good luck

Vinny, if I were you, I'd be very careful with the turbo boost. I built a couple of '49-'51 flathead six engines, back in the '50s. One was mildly souped up and another one was pretty radical for the day. They're sweet little engines and will run like stink, but the rods are weak. If you're going to put much stress on them, they'll give up the ghost! I certainly wouldn't plan on reving it much over 5,000 RPM, either. Fair warning and good luck!

Greetingd Dennis. I've given that therory some consideration already. I would like to go with a set of aluminum rods if I can find a company willing enough to fabricate me a set with the possability of usuing a stock rod as a template?
Is there any way of beefing up the mains with dual bolts?
Inline 300, Hi!! I'll go to that web site tomorrow evening. Its 11:00 & I got to be in the shop at 3a.m. for some O.T. Thank you all for the input. I'll get back to all tomorrow evening.
Happy motoring to everyone. Vince

Been a long time since I looked at a flathead Ford six's guts, but ARP bolts would be a MINIMUM for the lower end. Maybe there's a modern engine with better rods that you could modify to use. I used to race a buddy, who had a 230 Dodge in a '50-something Plymouth. I lost to him, more often than not and he never broke. I shook the rods loose on my engines, a couple of times, but luckily never threw one through the block. Sadly, I never could quite get the horsepower I needed to wipe him totally off the map. But he knew I was after him! On the occasions I did beat him, the feeling was absolute elation! Hey I was 17, then, and still learning. I'll tell you one thing; with a set of dual, homemade headers, exhausts, Smitty's and 3 single barrel carbs, there wasn't a sweeter sounding engine anywhere!

Vinny,

I was looking for an article I have, about using different manufacturer's rods, but haven't found it, yet. But, If you can find a good parts man, I'll bet you can find rods from another engine that are built tougher and can be modified to fit your engine. In the Jan/Feb 2003 12 Port News, there's an article about Charles Chandler's Model A, powered by a FH Ford six. Maybe you can contact Mr Chandler and get some pointers.

I see one glaring error in the article, though. There's mention of a 215 flathead six in '52. However, '52 was the first year for a very good OHV six, of 215 c.i. Although, it was smaller than the older FH 223, it was a strong and peppy engine.
