According to my Motor's manual, the only 6 available from '59 thru '64, in Ford 1/2 ton pickups, was the 223. The 240 replaced it in '65.

The 223 was an excellent engine, but it only had 4 main bearings. The 240 that replaced the 223, had 7 main bearings. Later, the 300 Ford engine, also with 7 main bearings, were available for heavier duty Ford pickups/trucks.

Was there ever a bigger 6 to compliment the 223?

Yes, there was a 262. It was from the 215,223,262 family of engines ending with '64. The 262s were considered Heavy-Duty and used in the larger trucks.

These were excellent engines and gave good service in stock form and could be made to run with the best of them, when modified.

Ok. There is a '62 Unibody for sale in my area. The ad said it had the 262. Just wondered if the guy was right. Thanks.

I'd be suspicious. The 262 wasn't an option in light trucks until 1964.

If you need a positive ID, a 262 has two horizontal ribs cast into the driver's side of the block where a 223 has just one.

..........OR, the 262 could have been installed in place of a dead 223. It's a bolt-up swap. Something that a previous owner, just like one of us, might have done!
