I have a 1949 Dodge 3-window coupe and had the same problem. I used a gas tank from a 63 Chevy Pickup and it fits and works just fine. I relocated it just below the package tray and had to relocate the filler tube but it was no big deal. Did it in a weekend.

how many gallons does it hold? I have a golf cart 8 gallon until i find something else. a 63 would be just as difficult to find as the 49. the 49 is 27 by 21 , so it is not very big.

It's 17 gallons. You can probably use any pickup truck gas tank. They're almost all vertical. You have to fabricate mounting brackets. I made mine out of 1/8x1 flat iron and tied it into the floor, up the back wall tied into the package tray and back down over the tank and tied into the floor again. Probably overkill, but I wanted to be sure that it wouldn't come loose in case of a collision. The other thing I considered was a moon gas tank, but unless you get the mongo-sized one (ie, big bucks) it will not hold much gas. I got my p/u gas tank from a guy up the street for $25. Feel free ask if you have any other questions. One other thing: if you still have the 6v system the sensor from a newer tank will most likely will require 12v. I'm going to 12v soon anyway, so I'll just top it off if I'm going on a trip, or use the odometer to keep track of gas level for now.

my 8 gallon golf cart tank just fits under the package tray. the spare tire stands up in the trunk , so makes the trunk very small. i have a small toyota tank and a small datson tank , but will not fit in the trunk. the original tank is 27 x 21 , which is not very wide because of the spare tire.

Sounds like you have a Sedan. I have the Coupe which only has one seat, and the trunk is huge. I didn't mind losing some space when I put in the p/u tank behind the seat under the package tray. It was still a little tight, but I got it in with no problems. I can see where it would be much smaller if you had a sedan, since you would have wheel wells on either side taking up gas tank space. You might want to consider a fuel cell (Jegs and Summit have them), since this will allow you to keep it in the stock location under the trunk instead of filling your trunk w/ gasoline. However, the only sensors I've seen for them are 12v.

I was thinking of the Por 15 if i can get the tank cleaned out. It is full of rust, from sitting years with gas in it. I found a 16 gallon fuel cell in the speedway catalog , for $110.00

I've seen guys hang a length of chain in the tank and shake it for a while to knock all the rust loose. Sounds kinda crazy, but it seems to work. If nothing else it'll put you in shape. I've never tried POR15. Let me know how it goes.

the chain idea sounds pretty good. I will put the tank in the bach of my golf cart and ride around my property. that should skate it up pretty well.

Thanks guys, the chain idea is working. I put the tank, with the chain inside, in my little utility cart pulled by my golf cart, and went up and down my bumpy driveway. wow, what a diffenence. I have to get the por 15 now, and the tank will look like new.
