I have a 1938 plymouth P6 with a flathead 6 and only 42,000 miles. It's all original and runs and drives great. I have been enjoying it for 5 years. I'm at a point where I'm getting a little bored with a totally stock vehicle. I need to replace the exhaust before summer so I want to either add a single muffler with dual tailpipes or a true dual exhaust if they make a split exhaust manifold. I would love to here what others have used and soundclips would be great. My main concern is the sound. I don't have any interest in swapping the engine since it runs perfect and it's different.

Viva la difference!
There are photos on a thread here which show a manifold modified to fit a second pipe. Sorry, can't remember which thread, but there aren't that many...
Oh, yeah, welcome to inliners.

i've been down this road many times for myself, friends who couldn't weld and customers.
running one pipe off of the exhaust, then splitting to duals, is a waste of effort and the resulting sound is not worth it.
only a dual outlet split manifold, or headers, with true dual exhaust will give you that sweet six cylinder sound.
any welder worth his salt can build you a nice split exhaust manifold. george asche in pa does a great job at splitting a stock manifold, if you can't find anyone near you to do the job.
headers are also available through stovebolt engine co.
you can taylor the sound from loud to quiet by choosing the right mufflers.
using true dual exhausts, you will be very pleased with the sound and wonder why you didn't do it sooner!
Lord, let me live long enough to do all the projects I have planned!

I paid a visit to George Asche last week. Here are a few pictures of his work. He does a true split on the stock manifold by welding the heat riser inside the manifold to block the two sides. He also rebuilds and re-jets Carter B&B carburetors for a matched pair when running duals. He also rebuilds overdrive transmissions for Mopar flat six powered cars. I was treated to a white knuckle ride in his 1950 Plymouth with dual carburetors and dual exhaust. The engine in this car has 280,000 miles on it and the main bearings have never been changed. George does not "baby" his stuff. He backed this Plymouth out of the garage and pulled on to the road. With a cold engine he ran up to fifty MPH in first overdrive. The engine must have been pulling close to 5 grand but it never missed a beat and sounded terrific with the dual exhaust. He also has a 1929 Desoto that he bought in the early 1950's. I was treated to a ride in this car a couple of years ago. I am using one of his manifolds on my car. George does not do puters. He can be reached at (814) 354-2621 Don Coatney

Computers would be simpler than his cars!
Did I ever tell the story about the guy I knew here who had a Jag Mk 10?
Instrumentation, far more elaborate than shown here, included air speed indicator, with the sensor sitting out on one front fender. Many bits fitted were from wartime aircraft.
Thanks for the pics of George and his bits.

Don, I wrote a piece for the 12 port news on George Asche's operation, after a visit with him a while back. However, I guess there isn't enough intrest in MOPARs for them to publish it. I sure had a great time visiting him. Just being able to spend time with him and get a ride in that DeSoto was worth the 200 mile ride up there! Ol' George is a fine fellow! My next street rod (if i live that long) will have a MOPAR flathead in it!

Dennis; Can you send me the piece you wrote up? I would like to read it. It was a bit more than a 200 mile trip for me. A friend who lives near Atlanta drove 4 hours to pick me up and we then drove close to 700 miles to get there. I wish we had more time to spend there. Don Coatney

Dennis and Don, I seem to remember a request by Wanda Kinkaid to resubmit articles because of some technical glitch involving 12 Port News. Why don't you contact her thru the 12PN and ask her about your article. Whether we are MOPAR fans or not doesn't really matter as we are all defininitey inline fans. I personally would really like to read more about George Asche because of the fine comments people like you two have made about him.

I think I'm going to get my manifold split. I even got the wife's blessing last night.
