I have a '65 Chevy C-10 with a 230 L6. I'm considering switching to an electric fan to reduce engine noise at highway speeds. There's only about 2" between the fan pulley and radiator. Is this possible, or should I just look for a staggered fan blade that doesn't whine as much.

Thanks,

Gene

I looked at my 63 and there appears there may be room to mount it in front of the radiator. You'd probably have to remove the grill in order to work on it. Mounting is going to be a bit of PITA as there is only a piece of channel on each side of the radiator. It's either use spacers or bolt to the side of the channel. I know the electric fan we used in the race trailer to cool the generator was either push or pull. Hope this helps.

I'm interested in the staggered fan,I have a "292" I'm building and it does'nt have a fan on it yet. And the junk yard is full of fans,so what is enterchangable with the 292? Explain what the staggered fan is too.

There are fans with blades that are not evenly spaced. This "staggered" look is supposed to cut down on the noise the fan produces at higher RPMs.

Maybe a clutch fan would work?

I'm running an electric pusher fan on my '50 Chevy 3100 with a '62 261 install, mainly for clearance reasons. The fan needs about 4" of clearance. I have it on the grille side, and it fits great. I used two horizontal pieces of strap steel to mount it to the radiator brace.

There are some low profile fans available but they can be pretty loud.

It uses a thermostic switch and draws 15 amps, so you need a good alternator. I'm running a 17" 2000 cfm fan. You will want the biggest fan you can get in there.
It is perfectly quiet when the fan isn't on. When it comes on it isn't overly loud. I like it.
