I posted this in the drivetrain column, but shoulda put it here. I just found out that bellhousings from AMC Spirits and two wheel drive Jeep Cherokees built from '81 to '83, used Pontiac-built 2.5 Liter four bangers. These engines have the same bellhousing flange that the smallblock V8s and I-6s have. They have FORD transmissions behind them and if you get a good deal on a 4 or 5 speed Ford tranny from a Jeep Cherokee, AMC Spirit, Mustang or Cougar, you can use one of those belhousings behind your 194,230,250, or 292s! Hope this helps someone.

Lord, let me live long enough to do all the projects I have planned!

Just ran across this posting while searching for bellhousing info. If you use the Ford top loader trans, you can adapt a Jeep CJ-7 or CJ-8 floor shifter. As I recall, the only modification os a small relief on the inside edge of the trans. This works for three- or four-speed transmissions. Anyone want details, let me know.
