Hope some one can help me out here. I have a 54 chevy truck and I took the 235 engine out and installed a 302 gmc engine,with a 5 speed trans. Now my problem is that I took the starter off the 235 and put it on the 302, I measured the 235 fly wheel and it measured in 5 inches I counted 20 teeth, and the 302 fly wheel in 5 inches,I counted 17 teeth. I did not think to check the fly wheel, I assumed they were the same.Do I change the bendix on the starter? Can some one tell me the difference in the fly wheel. I quess there are different fly wheels. This is a manuel starter.

when the change was made to 12 volts ( 1955 ) the number of teeth on the flywheel ring gear & starter drive gear changed. even though the 12 & 6 volt starters look alike the drive gears won't interchange. early starter-early flywheel. late starter-late flywheel. if you put the starter that came with the gmc on it you should be ok.

Will the 12 VDC starter off of a 55 & up 235 work on a 302 GMC of the same vintage?

Yes, 12V starters are the same for Chevy and GMC.
