Will a GM power steering pump work with a Ford rack/pinion power steering unit? Someone told me GMs operate at higher pressure and will make the Ford rack over-sensitive. I plan to add power steering to my 1940 Chevy/GMC. It has a Mustang front end. Also interested in any other helpful tips.

Speedway Motors has a pressure reducer that screws onto pump discharge.

This is the link to that unit http://www.speedwaymotors.com/p/5852,297_Mustang-II-Power-Steering-Flow-Valves.html
Others probably sell it or a similar unit.

Heidts has an adjustable unit http://www.heidts.com/heip27.htm#power
Scroll down the the page a bit.

This is an excellent device...the adjustable power steering valve! I installed a Mustang II front end under a '46 Chevy van with a 250 and the original power steering pump. The truck darted dangerously at even the slightest pressure on the steering wheel; it was spooky at any speed over about 25mph. We got an adjustable valve and the difference was remarkable and immediate. Afterwards, it was a pleasure to drive on the road, while still being easy to park.

Lord, let me live long enough to do all the projects I have planned!
