can anybody tell me what a 250 Chev inliner weighs ?

An engine swap book I have references the 230 / 250 inline Chevy as weighing 430 lbs in stock trim. They don't mention if this includes a flywheel but I imagine it doesn't. It does include the stock cast iron intake and exhaust manifolds and the water pump.
As a point of interest, the small block Chevy V8 goes around 530 lbs with iron manifolds and the old 216 Chevy 6 runs in at a whopping 635 lbs. Any wonder why replacing a 216 or 235 with the 250 is a win win situation except for the added length? Of course any late model trans behind the 250 puts weight back on versus the old 3 speed but at least it is weight added to a better point in the vehicle.

weightwise, the 194,230,250, is 440lbs., the average sbc/iron heads and manifolds is 575lbs.,the 216 and 235 are 630 lbs. i don't have the gmc 302 weight, but i bet it is maybe a little heavier than the 235. garyg Wrench Fetcher Stovebolter # 1703

There seems to be a lot of interest in engine weights recently, with at least threads on 250, GMC 302, and 216s. Comparing weights of different engines can be frustrating as the the various sources seldom indicate just what all components and accessories are included in the weights quoted in the lists. I have not worked on many of the late model Chevy sixes (194, 230, 250, 292), but I am currently building up a 261 (bored to 278) and have been weighing all of the components as I have been assembling it. The list is in this link: 261 Engine Weight Summary To summarize, the fully-assembled long-block components, including water pump, alternator, radiator hoses, etc. weigh 508 pounds; with the bellhousing, starter, flywheel, and clutch the weight is 599 pounds; If we add in the weight of six quarts of oil and 16 quarts of coolant the weight would be about 643 pounds. If someone sees that I have missed some parts let me know. Does someone have similar numbers for the 250 six? Is the extra 190 pounds for the 216-261, relative to the 250, all in the block, crank, rods, and head? It doesn't seem that there should be a big difference in the external parts. Hoyt, II #922

Hoyt, Nice chart on the 261 I have Hot Rod Sept 62, says the 194 is 415lb with no flywheel but all accessories. Not clear wet or dry.... Same chart puts the 283 at 530lb, seems a tad high - and 348 at 645lb I remember my 194 at 400 lb even but mightve been without alt or fan or something. As far as pieces of a 230 Chev: Bare block: 120 lb Head with therm housing and valves in it: 62 (Bare head guess 48) Crank: 50 Cam+Gear: 12 Oil Pan: 8 Intake+Exhaust manifolds together: 28 The block, crank, head adds up 93 lb lighter than your 261, but I cant figure where the rest of the weight comes off....

I'd say it's mostly due the casting wall thickness, pretty much cut in half from 5/16" to 5/32". When GM was designing the all-new Chevy and Pontiac V8s for 1955 this was part of the weight savings campaign, and a new revolution in casting techniques was major part of it.
By the time the sixes were due for modernization in 1962, the same casting advances were applied. The older designs which were taller (unable to fit under the low hoods of newer bodies) and longer and had thicker block and head castings had to go. The new thin-wall engines which shared some components with the small-block V8s (one more step towards corporate engine sharing) were 24% lighter than the old designs.
It's not hard to see that at least an extra hundred or so pounds of iron could be saved with the thinner block and head castings.

Even more weights: 194 Damper: 3 292 Damper: 11 400 Chev, including steel headers, iron intake+4v, starter, alt, fan, no flywheel: 560 lb 350 Chev, weighed same way: 545 lb 292 Chev, weighed same way, stock iron exhaust: 457 lb 250 Chev, weighed same way, stock iron exhaust: 425 lb 194 Chev weighed same way, stock iron exhaust: 400 lb Transmissions with fluid, converter, flywheel: Nova 3spd: 120 Powerglide: 150 Turbo350: 175-180 lb Tedious to weigh all that stuff but comes in handy later, this has been an interesting thread!
