I have a couple questions about the 250 vs. the 292. Obviously the 292 will most likely have more power in stock form, but what are the revving characteristics of the two? I am building a rock crawling buggy and had planned to use a 250, but a 292 has possibly fallen into my lap for cheap and I am thinking about using the 292.

What are the stock power ratings for these motors? The 292 is from a 1970 C-10. Does either motor opperate better in the mid & high RPM ranges? My gearing will be really low in this buggy and I will be spinning 3000-4000RPM at cruising speed on fireroads, and maybe a little higher on things like sand hills and stuff. Is either motor better then the other at handling higher RPM for sustained periods?

I know both motors opperate well in the lowend and produce good torque off idle which is why I want an I-6 for my crawler. Most of the time I will be in need of good lowend. Thanks

That's a lot of sustained RPMs for an inline. Because of the shorter stroke the 250 will handle higher Rs better. Because of the long stroke the 292 doesn't need high Rs. If you want to wind one up turbo a 230. It will sing! When I thought I was going to have to rebuild my '70 Blazer I was going to pull the 350 and put in a 292. The V8 is still ok but when it quits it's gone! At any rate don't let a cheap 292 get away.
