i noticed on my car the other day when i was adujsting my rebuilt carb that the fan has a slight woble to it and when the car is off you can wiggle it a little and the whole fan and pully move. is there a bolt holding the pully to the water pump that might be loose?

Malicer, it could be loose bolts that hold the fan and pully on. Also could be worn bearings in the pump. Just ran into that one on my Stude. SW

As a safety issue, please check the water pump out asap. If it comes apart while you are under the hood, it could be deadly. Also, if the pump comes apart, it could easily take out the radiator or more...

The same 4 bolts or studs that hold the fan in place pass through the pulley to the water pump hub. If they are tight then my money is on the water pump bearings being worn. Nothing to fix here just get a new pump, they're under $30.

Malicer, if you want to go the next step, switch to an electric cooling fan. I did and it's given two benefits, one; the fans hardly need to run at all (never once moving more than 15 mph) and two; a lot lower chance of me losing my fingers working on the engine while it's running. \:\)

There are kits around for this, but I just fabbed up some bracketry to use fans from the junkyard.

Why not take the opportunity to drain it all out and flush the system and install a fresh mixture? But if you've done that recently then you still have to remove most of it because on a 230 - 250 block the water pump sits fairly low in relation to the bottom of the water jacket.
A quick guess is you will need to drain approx 2 gals or slightly more before you won't have it pour out as you pull off the pump.

i was actually just thinking of that i might do a coolant flush and change the oil and filter. i guess you could kinda say i "flushed" the transmission last year when the line came off the cooler in the radiator and spewed 4l of trans fluid into my driveway.

GM cars in the early 1990s use electric fans that mount in front of the radiator behind the grill.I had one on my 1950 Chevy 1/2 ton and it worked great.I hooked up mine with a toggle switch, but you can go to the auto parts store and get a switch that will turn it on automatically. You should use 10 gauge wire,as the fan pulls alot of amps.If you are interested i will get the names and years of the cars that use the above fan.

the electric fan might not be a bad idea. i was thinking a flex fan would be nice along with some other little engine dress up stuff valve cover, side covers etc. but an electric fun would give the motor a little less stress as it wouldn't be running all the time.
