The 400 is great. The Transmission Oil Pressure is higher and thats why they work better. They were designed for 1 Ton trucks and big GM cars with big block engines.
My first car was a 66 Bel Air with 250-6 and a Powerglide. It got great gas milage but with only two forward gears the motor had limited RPM range.
