Now I have installed timing gears and such before and never any issues, but I just installed a Isky 262 cam in my son's 250 with an Isky 250 Timing gear, I lifted the crank up a little as to put in the new cam with little hassle, after slipping in the cam and torqued the crank back down the crank wouldnt budge, I reloosened the crank bolts and just tightened them one by one untill things started to bind again, this time I spun the motor over with the starter to maybe get a little wear pattern to loosen things up and it busted every tip on the timng gear and busted a couple of teeth on the crank gear, I'm guessing Isky gave me there gear for the 292 engine vs the 250, accoding to my salse slip I ordred the right peice, unfortunately I gave the package to the machine shop so I cant verify they gave me the correct package when I had them install the new gear on the cam. Has anyone else ran across this?

your 250 probably had teeth that were somewhat pointed. i bet you recieved the HD version from isky. squarer teeth. you should always replace both gears at the same time. i suffered a simuliar problem a few years ago.

just buy a new set from your machine shop and start over. all will be well. tom

Good Call. Even if the timing gear on the crank is not very old... it is basic mechanicing to replace the gears as a set. Since the Inline motors are direct contact gears instead of a timing chain this is even more important.
Looking forward to hear how it turns out.

I found out that there are 3 different set of gears (other than aluminum and fiber timing gear), 2 of which have markings of 14 & 20 and the other set is an HD version, what the 2 sets of 14 & 20 mean I havent figured out yet, my guess is pitch of the gears. All sets of gears have the same amount of teeth 27 & 54. And I did order up a set of gears today since both where wiped, should be here on Tuesday.

I just got Leos book in the mail this week. It has info on timing gears and how to install them so they go on easy and stay on the crankshaft. If you can, get a copy... It helped me understand a lot.
