I was looking on ebay at one of those cheepie chrome valve covers, and side plates, and the descrition say that it fits only 75-79... Is this true, or are tey mistaken? I have a 1970 250, Am I right in thinking that these will fit my motor? Thanks in advance!!!

I going to assume  that the reason they say 75-79 is the vent on the front drivers side that is for a (smog) hose to the air cleaner. They will work, as repros' fit, \:D ,just plug the vent. Perhaps some one has experience with them.

Lee,It will fit.I sold a '68 C-10 with a 250 that is now sporting the chrome valve cover. As Larry noted the side air hole is plugged if the smog pump is removed. I seem to remember one eBayer offered a chrome "button" for that purpose with his cover.

Could the 75 to 79 valve cover be for the cylinder head with built in intake manifold (IIM)?

how cheap is it? I know in the LMCTrucks Winter ´04 catalog, you can get a brand spankin´ new one for I think $32. They also have chrome sideplate covers for 250 (too bad they don´t have ´em for 292).

Hi Lee, I hope you received your intake & exaust by now. I bought a set of those rocker/side covers for my motor and found out they leak like a son of a gun. even when I permatexed the heck out of them. I ask a few people and they all gave me the same answer ...they leak badly.
Good luck
Ken

Everything I've heard is pretty much what Ken's said. These things are cheap junk. Very thin sheet metal that will permanently leak the first time you overtorque the valve cover bolts (and unfortunately that's very easy to do).

I recommend buying the heavier aluminum covers. You can buy Clifford, Offenhauser or Mercury Marine rocker covers. The Offenhauser has the nicest finish, the Mercury Marine covers are no longer made but can be found relatively cheap on Ebay (30-40 bucks, compared to $80-$100 for a used Clifford or Offy).

I have one on my 292 and it's great. They're larger than the stock cover and actually makes your engine look a little larger. Good thing about the Mercruiser cover is that they're forgiving if you slightly overtorque the cover, the flange won't bend, and leaks will be history.
