I am building a dual exhaust system for my 235 starting with Fenton cast iron manifolds. I would like to put a crossover in it before the mufflers, but I am afraid that it might kill the distinctive sound that an inline 6 with dual exhaust makes. Has anyone done this and if so did it affect the sound?
Thanks, Diceman

Hey diceman, on most other engine types, an H-pipe will affect the exhaust tone to some degree. But you never know, it might make it even more distinct on an inline.

Maybe I should put a butterfly valve in the "H" pipe. Then I can try it both ways.

My truck has a distinctive six exhaust sound - even with a dual exhaust feeding one muffler and one exhaust pipe.

At 2000 rpm running in OD at a little over 60mph - no sweeter sound in the automotive world!

Very nice Ken! Is it 2-2" in and a 3" out? Did you buy or build your system? Can't tell if it has mandrel bends or not.

The first exhaust system I had on the 270 in my '53 pickup had an "H" pipe. It had Viper headers from Clifford with the cross over between them and the glass packs. It sounded like a six. Tom

diceman - I think it is 2 x 2-1/2 in and 2-1/2" out or it might be 2 x 2-1/2" in and 3" out, I don't remember. It has a nice rap to it and I had an exhaust shop here in town do it. Only 3 pieces of pipe with mandrel bends.

One unforeseen snafu was that the headers had an offsize 3-bolt flange and I had to run back to my shop and make them from scratch while the truck sat on the lift. The photo is also a link to the webshots album showing different views.

The truck looks basically stock as long as you don't open the hood or look underneath - but it can run at freeway speeds all day long effortlessly.
