I am using a 12 volt Pertronixs unit. Can anyone tell me which coil to choose either the 1.5 or the 3.0 ohm. also why?

The instructions with my Pertonix unit called for a 1.5 coil. If you don't have the instructions I would try to contact Pertronix to see which one to use with the particular kit you have, or post that info and maybe someone has the same. I'll dig around and see if I can find those instructions today.

Haven't located the instructions as yet. If memory serves it had to do with 6 cyl vs 8 cyl. But then, memory and I aren't always on speaking terms.

Still can't locate the instructions but I did visit the Pertonix web site and it is the 3 ohm for the 6 cylinder and 1.5 for the 8. Google them.
