I bought a motor from a shop, and I was told it was a 1970 250 truck motor... I finallt got it into my car and could not get the starter to turn the motor over. It sounded like it was hitting right into the flywheel. I tryed shimming it with no success. I could not even get the dowl in there. When I tighten the starter down it does not look like it is sitting right either. So I pulled the motor and the teeth to the stater look like they are sitting in the teeth for the flywheel. Is there different size starters for this motor? The one that I have has the parrelel bolts, just like on the motor. I have had a horrable time with this motor can any one please help...

Can you verify that the motor can be turned over freely? It's possible that you've got the starter setup right and it's not capable of spinning the motor. What kind of power source are you using? Battery? Good wires? Is the battery charged properly? I had a scare like that where I thought my starter was dead but the battery had run down while sitting (thought it would be good still). Rule things out one at a time.

Is it the right starter for the number of teeth on the flywheel? This affects the position of the starter.

I first tried it in the car after I put it in, then I tried after I took it out, both with the same results... I also tried two different batteries. But I do know that when I bought the starter the man that sold it to me did not ask what size clutch, or any other "Q" like that... I have the 10" clutch, and the smaller flywheel, does any body know how many teeth that one has? Also, thank you for your help...

Lee, the flywheel/flexplate came in 153 and 168 tooth configurations. Do your starter bolts mount vertical or horizontal? The starter I just got for my 292 is a gear drive with dual vertical bolt patterns to fit 153 or 168 flywheels. This shifts the starter towards the frame for the higher tooth count. It is the same as for a SBC. Sam

Mt motor has the bolt holes that are not off set, but next to each other. I took the motor out to see what was happening and the shaft for the gears on the starter is almost right up against the gear ring for the flywheel... I took the starter back to see if there was a diffent type for my app., and was told that there is not... So what should I do? There has to be a starter that fits my motor somewhere? Should I try to use thick washers in place of the shimms? Sorry I wrote so much, I really want to get my baby on the road...
