Hmmm...
I was considering the TH350 instead of the 700R4 because of cost and ease of installation. (I'm not really keen on messing with the cross member or drive shaft.) That choice isn't set in stone though, especially if I'd see a significant gain in acceleration.
Rear end...man...I was afraid somebody would suggest that.
I don't remember what the stock rear end is off the top of my head. 3.3 something, I think.
As far as swapping out the 230 for something larger, that would be the sensible thing to do, but I'd like to avoid it. This car has been in my family a long time and I'd like to keep its original power plant. I realize that's completely illogical, though.
