"By-pass" filters only filter about 1/6 of the engine oil, when working at their best.
Many times they leak and start fires as the pressure line is so close to the exhaust pipe. Because of this they are best disposed of & plugs put in the block.
An oil fire gets hot so fast, that by the time you know your on fire, It's to late to stop it.
Many will argue otherwise, but factory filters didn't come along (6 cyl) utill 1963 and they were no where near the exhaust.
Changing your oil regulary is the best way too protect your engine.
