Has anyone looked at the Vortec 5 as a replacement for earlier I6 engines? The length of the Vortec I6 may preclude its use in earlier engine compartments.

Not sure on the length or exact specs of this engine. However, read a review of the Colorado -- sluggish and low tow numbers. To my way of thinking this indicates a lack of low end torque.

It is advertised as making 220 hp which is cool, but it says nada about torque #s. I was considering getting one of those colorados last spring, but decided to wait because I got my hands on a 68 C30 and spent the down payment money on fixing that...292 = much better hauling than the colorado as I heard the inline 5 wasn't kicking much in the low rpms like that 292 so I'm happy about that. It does give great mpgs I heard so it could still be a considerable swap to me to put in an old car that is like a daily driver or something and you want to convert to fuel injection and better mpgs.

I have been trying to find one of those engines, but no one seems to have any for sale. I'm sure there are Colorados that have been side-swiped or rear ended in a junk yard somewhere. Oh well, probably too new of an engine. I would like to get one and hot rod it out. Does anyone know if it has an overhead cam? I would like to get one with a manual tranny for a 69 C-10 daily driver project. Is the I-6 vortec really too long? I heard it has a front sump oil pan. I think putting one of those in an old car/truck would be way cool! Dano

Two overhead cams. The I6 doen't have a manual tranmission option, maybe a 5 cylinder clutch and flywheel could be used. One problem I see with these engines for narrow framed cars is that they are really wide at pan level.

Here's the numbers I found; Vortec 3500 I-5
220 hp @ 5600 rpm 225 ft-lb @ 4000 rpm
I still do not know what type of 5 speed overdrive manual tranny it has. It seems like chevrolet.com never gives the manufacturer of the transmissions that they use. Dano

You buy one and then need to adapt all the electronic engine management controls to get it to run.Or tinker endlessly making a new carb manifold and fitting a conventional ignition to find it detonates terrible without the fuel injection.Lot of money for not much HP from an ugly engine.
