can anyone tell me how to get the float level adjustment gauge on page 6M-11 of 1963 chevrolet truck shop manual. i rebuilt the carb on my truck recently and just had to eyeball it. i could do the float drop adjustment but not having tool # 3696192 i couldn't do float level adjustment. does anyone have a template or measurements i can fabricate this tool? it runs fine by eyeballing it but having no real auto training and only knowledge from books so i don't know how critical this is. -stacy

I know in Carter, Edelbrock and Holley re-carb kits, the float level gauge is included. It's just a cardboard mini-version of a carpenters square, printed in 1/32" graduations. It's L-shaped, 1/4" wide and 2" X 1.5" -- usually.
Since a GM "special tool" of a '63 vintage is extremely rare, I would ask any hotrod buddies who are still into carburetion if they have any extras lying around.

Hoggy,

I just purchased a NAPA rebuild kit for a BV and although it doesn't have the cardboard float tool, it indicates that the correct float level is 1 9/32". The correct float drop is 1 3/4".

hoggy, shop manuals usually give the dimensions in inches too. You might have to dig through a carb listing in the manual if one is provided and it will tell you the float settings, choke plate clearance, fast and hot idle speeds, etc. Specs for any of the Rochester singles ought to be about the same. Motors Manuals usually have a very complete list of carb spec for the years the particular manual covers.
