I would be surprised if you could order an LP engine over the counter, but if you can find one, then have at it. They came with a higher compression ratio because LP has better anti-knock characteristics than gasoline (higher octane rating). Badger Pistons used to (and may still) make forged LP units, as well as a couple other manufacturers. I believe the LP ratio was either 8.8 or 9 to 1. Considering that you can easily build a 10 or 11 to 1 engine with a good camshaft and still use pump gas, a 9 to 1 ratio isn't going to give you any trouble.
