Does anyone have any plans or ideas on an adapter for mounting an inline on an engine stand? About 9 years ago I got some info from a Ron Sneddon, who had made an adapter for a 292. He sent some verbage but the drawing didn't come through. I want to mount a Pontiac 8. Thanks for any help you can give.

Here is an adapter for early Chevy and GMC 6s. I don't know if would work for your Pontiac 8. You may have to lengthen the bottom leg. Contact CNC Dude on this site he'll probably make one for you. Beater

Was Sneddon's mount the one that mounted on the side of the block near the center of gravity? It is a good system for a long block. Probably in 12PN if you can get a copy.
Answered my own question after checking back copy f 12PN. \:\) His article is in the Sept./Oct.2003 issue.

Tom Langdon also made a side mount engine stand setup for the Stovebolt's as well. I talked to him about my design that Beater showed a link to in the above post several years ago and he felt it would also be an improvement over the current adjustable engine stand heads that are used today. I do have one for the Straight 8 Pontiac as well.

You must be getting oldtimers Larry because you made the same comment 3 years ago about this same topic. The Stovebolts and GMC engines require you to bolt the bellhousing to the block first before you can bolt the flexplate or flywheel to the engines. So bolting the flexplate or flywheel to these engines first would be a waste of energy to only remove them again to install the bellhousing. The Pontiac is the same design as well.

A quality 4 wheel stand will hold a fully loaded 6 cylinder inline safely. And most can adapt to the rear of a GMC or early Chevy block.

It would be good to be able to mount an engine from the other end so crank to flywheel issues could be dealt with off the floor. I guess that is a real advantage to mounting from the side. Another plus to side mount is that the length of the engine is less of an problem.

I've got a side mount Flathead Ford adapter that seems like it works good. It does move all the weight toward the back of the stand and seems to make it more balanced and steady, so I bet it does the same for the 6 cylinders also.

Yes, that mount was on side of engine. What is "12PN"? How can I access it or get a copy? Thanks.

12PN is the 12 Port News, the newsletter for the Inliners International Club.

Copies are a mere membership away.

I built and used the side mount from 12PN for my 292 and it worked great...based on that I also used the flathead side mount on a concurrent build. They both made life much easier for me.
