I'm doing the 216 to 261 swap for a '50 Sedan and the 261 did not come with the harmonic balancer. Does the 235 and the 261 use the same harmonic balancer? Does anyone know who sells new or rebuilt balancers for these engines? If I get one out of a junkyard, given that it will be around 45 years old, is it mandatory that I get it rebuilt and how do you tell if one is bad and needs rebuilding? I tried the "Damperdoctor" but he hadn't heard of the 261 engine. He did say he could rebuild a 235 if I sent it to him.
thanks, Dan

Yes, the '55-62 261 and 235 balancers are the same. I have never had a bad one yet, so I don't see why you couldn't use one straight out of the boneyard. If it has a groove worn into it from the seal, get a speedy sleeve for a small block V8. They are the same diameter.

Dear Dan;
It just maters what size belt you want to run.
I ran my 216 (wide belt) balancer on my 54 261. So don't worry, they all interchange.
Just put your water pump pulley (1950 )on the 'short pump' that Patrick's sells & it all will look stock. Same belt you were using too.
You don't need a rebuilt.
Good luck, John M...
