So I told my instructor that people are putting these 4200's in older pickups. He said lets go for a walk......

That is a brand new 4200.... he seemed more excited about finding out what it would take to get into my truck then i was.

Is it possible to slap one of these in for under a couple grand? If so whats needed to put it in my 68?

First you'll need a rear sump oil pan so it will fit into most any earlier vehicle, efi-diy here on the forum makes and sells those. If you plan to use an earlier tranny like a TH350 or 400, or even an overdrive, you will need to find an adapter. Other than the price of the core engine/tranny and computer, it really isn't that expensive to do the swap.

Most any salvage yard that has vehicles with those engines in them. You will also need the gas pedal assembly, as these engines are drive by wire type and that is required. EFI-DIY or Limequat can help fill in any gaps that you might need to be aware of as well.

Lime-Swap.com for the harness and PCM. I have cores of both, looks like you'll need them.

It would be fairly expensive to change over to the 4200. Lets say they give you the motor.
Still buying:
Computer
Wire harness
Fuel system
Oil pan
Transmission
All accesories and brackets

Having to fab up:
Motor mounts
Better electrical system

Having to learn:
EFI programing

Not saying it would be bad to do. It's good to learn to fab and program something.

A nice running street 250 will put out 250-275 hp and as much tq. Probably more tq than the 4200. Probably more HP than the 4200 at a lower rpm.

The 4200 is still a more efficient engine, no doubt.

Tom... not quite correct...

It would be fairly expensive to change over to the 4200. Lets say they give you the motor.
Still buying:
Computer
Wire harness lime-swap
Fuel system
Oil pan
Transmission wreckers or use an adapter for your existing trans
All accesories and brackets wreckers

All of the above $1500.

Having to fab up:
Motor mounts
Better electrical system <<<<<< part of the 4200 harness - The '68 harness needs a relay added to power the ignition coils instead of the resistor wire for the old points.

Having to learn:
EFI programing <<<<<<<< not required - Lime-swap does all the hard work for $99

Not saying it would be bad to do. It's good to learn to fab and program something.

A nice running street 250 will put out 250-275 hp <<< Right - NOT unless its turbo-ed or its going to be really lumpy and need to turn 7000 rpm to make that kind of power.

and as much tq. Probably more tq than the 4200. Probably more HP than the 4200 at a lower rpm. NOPE not after a tune goes into the PCM -

this is real data - rear wheel power - 4200 with headers

4200 rear wheel power

The 4200 is still a more efficient engine, no doubt.

To do a 275HP 250

you would need:

600 cfm carb or sidedrafts
intake manifold
Lots of head work - big valves, lump ports + a lot of porting
headers
big lumpy cam /lifters
proper damper to turn the rpm needed to make that kind of power
high compression pistons/rings + machine work
and most likely a good set of rods

If i remember right the 4200 came stock out of the box at 270hp and with some tune on the comp.it pushed 300.

2006-2009 make 291.
I made 250 to the wheels n/a. Autoroc made 414 with 10 lbs of boost on an otherwise stock engine.
