I have a 72gmc thats has a 292 going into it and i was aslo looking at the nv3500 but ended up fiding a tremec 5 speed the original tko 3550 (260 0708) for pretty dang cheap has a numerous amount of shifter positions to work with any combination including offset shifters maybe if you find it cheap enough take a look for one of those? Can use stand fork or hydraulic throwout and comes with cabel or electronic spedo
