Hi jerrybev . . .

Why are you considering potentially maxing out a 64 year old truck? What do you need to carry and how far?

With antique suspension I would be concerned with breaking old degraded springs (among other things). While dually tires do create stability and safety (with 4 tire contact patches) - they don't increase the load rating of the frame/springs. And if you are talking about trailer pulling then overdoing tongue weight can lead to stability problems as the front wheels carry less and less weight.

And then there is the question of brakes. My Fleetline is no super star when it comes to emergency stopping distances. And although Huck brakes were a great system for their time - my fast-back weighs just 3000 pounds. Three quarters of a ton in payload is 1500 additional pounds over and above the weight of the truck . . . all relying on the same Huck braking system.

Interested to hear what you are contemplating carrying on such an old mule . . .

What is the model of the truck? I had an ex-CDF '40 GMC that had dual rear wheels (with extended fenders) and a 9 1/2' bed. It was actually a AC302 chassis with a 236" GMC, 4 speed, and 2 speed rear on 20" rims. It would carry all the road base you could load into it with ease, stopped as well as it ever did, and actually steering was easier with a couple of tons on the back ;-)

Well, I don't have a 3/4 ton but I'll tell you that a 1/2 ton doesn't like more than a ton of 413 Dodge Big Six. It was a tough dat for the '53, but it did it over really rough roads and didn't break any thing except the exhaust pipe dragging on the ground.

Thanks Josh, It looks different now but it won't haul any more weight. I finally got the tape mess off of the flames.

Here's a link to a 51. Don't think anything really changed until 55. Hope it helps.
