i've got a 2 X 1 offy intake and the heat plate to get water heat to my 250. i've read somewhere when you do that in an offy with the "freeze" plugs they tend to leak. suggestion was to weld them up before installing. are the plugs aluminum or steel and what would that imply about welding them?

You can do 1 of a few things for this fix. they are a thin metal plug.

1) (Least) JB weld over them.
2) Tap a pipe plug into it.
3) make Alum plug and have someone Or you weld it in.

The plugs I pulled from mine were aluminum but too thin to weld I think. Mine was a 3X1 and I cut it down to make a 2X1 for a 4 cylinder. I welded an aluminum pipe bung in the front hole and another one on the cover plate on the bottom. You could remove both plugs, weld in bungs for water in and out and use a flay plate on the bottom where the exhaust used to enter. Or you could just JB weld over the old plugs. You a a man after my own heart. I really like the way you used the end of the old 6 cyl to finish off the cut end for the 4. I had one of those engines in a 1962 Chevy 11 100 coupe. Wasn't much speed equipment other than an Ansen head or injectors in 63........JD

Thanks, My plan was to grind the welds and either sand blast or polish it so it all looked the same, but my son was so proud of his TIG work that I left it. The rest of the car is going to have a lot of home made features so it will be fine.
