It was mostly due to a poor design with the intake and exhaust all being made as one casting with the head.
I find it hard to believe that GM somehow saved money by creating a single (but more complicated) casting - versus just casting individual parts and machining them to mate. But I guess the cost of hardware/gaskets and labor to mate them is in the mix too . . .
